The importance of human rights to MIASA is profound. Our members’ approach to human rights is founded on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The respect for the rights of employees, host communities and business partners [and their interests, cultures, customs and values] is informed by the ‘Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights: Implementing the United Nations “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework’.
The UN Guiding Principles provide an ethical compass in addition to the overlapping responsibility of both government and business to deal with human rights. While the policy commitment to human rights is an important starting point for companies to demonstrate their respect for human rights, transitioning from corporate policy to practice on the ground requires each company to establish internal processes that ensure implementation at an operational level.
